In this course, students will be exposed to: (1) Respiratory disorders (2) Prepare, assist and care to patients with diagnostic procedures.
Respiratory nursing is a specialized field of nursing that focuses on the care of patients with respiratory disorders. These can range from acute conditions like pneumonia and asthma to chronic illnesses like COPD and pulmonary fibrosis. Respiratory nurses play a crucial role in diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with these conditions, and they often work across various healthcare settings, including:
- Hospitals: In critical care units, emergency rooms, and respiratory wards.
- Outpatient clinics: Providing ongoing care and education for patients with chronic conditions.
- Home care: Supporting patients who require respiratory therapy at home.
- Assessment: Performing physical examinations, reviewing medical history, and monitoring vital signs to assess the severity and nature of a patient's respiratory problems.
- Diagnosis: Assisting doctors in ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests like lung function tests and chest X-rays.
- Treatment: Administering respiratory medications, oxygen therapy, and other treatments as prescribed by the doctor.
- Patient education: Teaching patients about their condition, medications, and self-management techniques.
- Rehabilitation: Helping patients regain strength and function after a respiratory illness or surgery.
- Counseling and support: Providing emotional and psychological support to patients and their families coping with chronic respiratory conditions.
