Cell Biology And Genetics
Cell biology and genetics is a branch of science dealing with the mechanism and regulatory activity of all biological activities associated with life. The genetic material present in the chromosome controls all the metabolic processes of a cell. The DNA present in the chromosome of a cell ensures that all life processes carried out by a cell such as digestion, respiration, reproduction are carried out in a highly regulated manner. The importance of genetics inside a cell is highlighted by the increasing occurrence of several genetic disorders and cell cycle deregulatory disorders such as cancer.
The field of genetics provides an opportunity to understand the basic principles and mechanism behind the gene regulation that controls the destiny, structure and function of a cell. The study of cell biology and genetics occupies much significance in this regard.
This module covers a range of topics intended to give a comprehensive idea about the role of genetics in the life of a cell.
1. To impart an idea about the organisation, structure and function of a prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell.
2. To introduce the basics of biomolecules such as DNA, RNA, protein synthesis and enzymes involved in cellular metabolism and function.
3. To give an idea about the role played by the chromosome of a cell in controlling the function and activity of a cell.
4. To provide an overview about the DNA replication, transcription and principles of gene regulation and expression.
5. To train the students and develop their practical skills in the field of cell biology and genetics.
