LABORATORY SCIENCE & INSTRUMENTATION I

COURSE INTRODUCTION

This is an introduction to the basic elements of laboratory practice and will cover the areas of laboratory safety, data handling, the use of common instruments, basic laboratory manipulations in microbiology, histology and biochemistry including liquid handling.

SYNOPSIS OF THE COURSE

This course will introduce students to basic laboratory techniques as well as concepts of laboratory management and maintenance.This module will also enable the students to utilize a wide variety of basic equipment and to perform basic manipulations that are common to all disciplines of the laboratory sciences.

AIMS OF THE COURSE


The module aims to introduce students to the basics of the following:

laboratory instruments and apparatus, and their handling and care
the principles behind the instruments
use and care of the microscope
laboratory manipulations in microbiology, biology and biochemistry.
liquid handling.
laboratory mathematics.

BASIC MICROBIOLOGY

BASIC MICROBIOLOGY

This course will teach students about basic microbiology in terms of techniques, morphology and safety. Emphasization will be given to the basic staining and cultural techniques with importance to safe operating procedures and sterilization.
